The popular perception of Rhinos as Exceptional and Daunting is exciting for those who see Us that way. Heaven knows, Rhinos ourselves like a thrill now and then.
But what We are reminded about from infancy is that other folks’ opinions, while stimulating, don’t mean much. A fickle crew, the Public.
What Rhinos require is to impress ourselves. Daily.
Almost everybody likes the idea of knowing the Future, usually working on the assumption We’ll like the news and our part in it.
‘Psephomancy’ is the practice of reading Pebbles, and over the past 50 million years there have been many advocates for its merits. Rhinos are wary of irritating Nature by doing too much Exploration. We figure, whatever is on its way, We’re built for it. Probably.
The Problem is: Rhinos are not immune to Temptation, whatever you may have heard.
We Rhinos do not pretend to know what We’re doing or why. Our egos don’t need that hollow Reassurance. We are entirely Natural, the way Nature made Us and intended Us to be.
Nature’s Intentions are the only ones that count. Others are just Tomfoolery and Hogwash. Do Rhinos fuel the engines of Nature? No, We are the recipients, not the Primal Energy.
Is every day a Thrill? Perhaps, if not for Rhinos, for other critters.
Fame is all very well, and Rhinos appreciate being thought of fondly, the world over. We are grateful that We are as We are.
But there is a peculiar brand of Fatigue that typifies matters from time to time.
It’s a Glamorous Treadmill, but it’s a Rhino’s Destiny. Naturally.
Need We say more?
Let’s hope not.
The Diamond Sutra was printed in 868 AD. It was the first printed document that still exists, albeit a scroll, printed with wood blocks, not moveable type. It’s in the British Library in London.
The Buddhist philosophy it offers is that We are each defined by Everything Else around Us. We are each crucial to the Whole, being the missing piece.
Rhinos like this idea. It seems in proportion. We are not The Whole; We are a component of The Whole, neither dismissed nor exalted. We are at One with all of Nature. The Moth no more or less than the Mountain.
No matter what We Rhinos might like to suppose, We are not the same as Yesterday. We are only on our route to Tomorrow, with whatever’s in store.
It might make a rational critter jumpy, but We Rhinos have lasted a long time, simply attending to Today. Today works for Us.
Overall, are We improving? We like to think so. No moment is impervious to Criticism, after all.
Nature likes things to keep rolling along, changing as suits the system at the moment. Naturally We Rhinos change as does everything around Us, each on Nature’s timetable.
We Rhinos do not put ourselves above the Natural Order.
Still, some changes are more welcome than others.
Rhinos are prey to all sorts of Ideas and Concepts, none of which seem to have a known source. When We are distracted, as Rhinos often are, these Obscurities creep up and jump into our heads.
These are Subliminal Thoughts and Impressions, coming from wherever they come from, and staying as long as they like. We may not even know they are in there, exerting their influence.
It is small wonder that Rhinos are sometimes taken aback by our own special Logic. Golly.
