First things first

The Diamond Sutra was printed in 868 AD. It was the first printed document that still exists, albeit a scroll, printed with wood blocks, not moveable type. It’s in the British Library in London.

The Buddhist philosophy it offers is that We are each defined by Everything Else around Us. We are each crucial to the Whole, being the missing piece.

Rhinos like this idea. It seems in proportion. We are not The Whole; We are a component of The Whole, neither dismissed nor exalted. We are at One with all of Nature. The Moth no more or less than the Mountain.

Put Put

Today is National Miniature Golf Day. A frustrating game; it seems so simple, yet it requires skills most Rhinos lack. In almost every case, We can only get better.

Rhinos usually play our games after everybody else has called it quits for the night. Most of our tournaments involve a lot of kicking the ball, which is considered fair when the contestants get testy. Then it’s time for Hole #2.

We have excellent night vision, no matter what they tell you.

Who knew?

Today in 1660, a Mr. Isaack B. Fubine was granted a patent, naming him the inventor of Macaroni. That was in the Hague, in Holland.

Macaroni was known before that, but nobody seems to have thought to legalize the topic. So, good for Mr. Fubine.

Macaroni-and-cheese is a different question, and the YIR Research Department has gone to lunch. Sorry; these things happen.

5-1 UhOh 2039

Today is May Day, a seasonal festival, but oddly enough, it is also Save the Rhino Day. Thus it is May Day, and also a ‘Mayday’ call for assistance.

Rhinos, through no known fault of our own, face both poaching and loss of habitable turf in the Wild. The folk responsible will need to curtail their efforts, or the jig will be up for Us Rhinos.

If you can help Us, look up a Rhino group, and chip in where you can. Thank you.

Light Feet and Rhythm

Today is International Dance Day, celebrating Cultural Sharing and Appreciation, which sounds like a good thing.

We Rhinos had assumed it meant the space between two or more Nations. We have to report that dancing down those fine lines seems impracticable. You’re in Nation A or Nation B, almost anywhere you go. No in-betweens.

Since Rhinos don’t understand these border distinctions, We just dance around, anywhere. And a good time is had by all. When asked to go elsewhere, We do, with cha-cha feet.

Tremors

Today is the birthday of Mr. Charles F. Richter (1900) who, with Mr. Beno Gutenberg, invented and developed Seismology and a scale for gauging Earthquakes during the 1930s.

A grand effort and much to be grateful for! They studied California, where there is a lot of Earthquaking. Later on, they expanded their work, sharing with scientists around the world.

We Rhinos think the Earth can use all the study it can get. With Nature, the point is about getting out of the way… in time, when possible.

Scrub-a-dub-dub

It’s William Shakespeare’s birthday so YIR is reposting a dramatic picture from August 2016, commemorating washed hands just after things got out of hand. It is part of a tongue-in-cheek series on Shakespeare’s plays.

Shown is Mrs. Macbeth, a-washing away her criminal collusion in dastardly doings. In Scotland, no less.

Fame, Fame!

Today is the day when We celebrate Mr. William Shakespeare’s birth, back in 1564. If it wasn’t today, it was close to it. Maybe there was other stuff going on, or his mother just wasn’t up to finding a registrar. Sometimes, close is close enough.

Mr. Shakespeare had an intriguing life; whole chunks of his timeline are missing, and after all this time, it’s unlikely We will ever fill in the blanks. He became the most famous playwright to ever live anywhere, so his time off must have been good to him, one way and another.

Maybe he spent his time as an apprentice, learning Penmanship. Who can say?
