Nothing could be finer…

Today, in 1789, North Carolina was admitted to the Union, the 12th State. North Carolina has a rich and varied history, with a rich and varied wildlife.

Of interest is Kitty Hawk, site of the Wright brother’s famous flying experiments. December 17, 1903, a successful flight of 59 seconds!

Rhinos have tried to find out how birds feel about having their flight paths cluttered, but birds are hard to pin down on many topics, including this one.

The Drawing Board

Long since, We Rhinos concluded that Nature had no intention whatever of Rhinos being Perfect. Consequently, We are appealingly slapdash.

And a good thing too. If Rhinos were all Perfect, there would be next-to-no way to tell one of Us from another.

By the present system, We get more varied approaches to the Matters at Hand. Which may account for something spectacular, at least We hope so.

A-Musements

The Greek Muses are supposedly Supervisors of the Arts, a poetic and enchanting concept, We Rhinos think. We are all for Muses.

A slight difference is that We Rhinos feel sure that each and every Rhino ever has our own individual Muse. That Muse sees each Rhino’s true Nature. It is the abstract cousin of our childhood Invisible Friends, a companion to support our turns of mind. As time goes by, our internal Muse gradually makes itself better known.

Pretty sweet system.

OOOOOOOOOO-klahoma!

Oklahoma achieved statehood today, in 1907. It has a rich and complex history, starting with the Native People and followed by homesteaders, trying to make a living on the prairie.

In the 1930s, following years of drought, the land gave out, ruining the hopes of decent crops. Erosion and wind created the Dust Bowl. There followed very hard times indeed.

But Oklahomans are rugged. They carved out a healthy living over time, helped in part by the discovery of oil. Rhinos everywhere salute their determination.

Impressionisms

Each and every critter, especially Rhinos, has a Sphere of Influence, often many, referring to the individual impact one gifts to the Cosmos, whether asked to or not.

A Rhino’s importance is not only to itself and its family, but to its community, its biosphere, its species, its location, its place in the Grand Picture.

And what is relaxing about it all, is that no Rhino can calculate its affect for itself. So We can smile and cruise on, Naturally.

By the light of the silvery moon

Yup, it’s Full Moon time again. This time it’s a Beaver Moon. We don’t remember why.

We don’t think We have mentioned this before, but We want our Readers informed. It’s a good thing to recall that when the moon is full, there is an increased risk of Earthquakes. We kid you not. Look it up.

Obviously Nature likes it that way, although there are rumors of something about ‘plate tectonics’ and the moon’s gravitational pull, however those work. (?) Updates as they come in.

Happy Birthday

Today, back in 1889, Washington (the State) was admitted to the United States. Coming up with a name seems to have been tricky (see November 10), but they settled on Washington, in honor of George Washington. Thus, Washington is the only state named for a president.

Washington’s highest peak is Mt. Rainier. Not only is it impressive, but it is dangerous, being an active volcano. Keep your running shoes handy.

This is old Rhino stomping grounds, and if you go up to Blue Lake, near Coulee City, you can risk life and limb by visiting a cave which formed around the body of a Rhino 15 million years ago. It is not conveniently located. Rhinos left the Americas about 10 million years ago, after a long and highly successful residence.

FYI: On YouTube, you can listen to a song written in honor of the cave. Look up ‘Blue Lake Rhino‘, performed by the Ratfish Wranglers. It’s bound to perk up your Monday.

A rose by any other name…

A quote from Wm. Shakespeare: “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet”. That Mr. Shakespeare had quite a way with Words.

Rhinos don’t use Words too much. An associated point is that Names, per se, are entirely flexible for Us Rhinos. If people refer to Us as Gortwiggles, what has changed for Us? Right: nothing.

Maybe Words provide less communication than is commonly supposed, no matter how seductive and addictive Words can be.
