From time to time one of Us decides to take the road less traveled. What impels unconventional choices is hard to pin down, and often an interview afterwards is hard to arrange. We can only suppose it seemed necessary at the time, and the individual seized the moment.

Our point is: since We do not know the details, We are in no position to analyze the resulting decisions. We might summon Common Sense to arbitrate advisability, but much of history (particularly Rhino History) is made memorable by Uncommon Sense. Why indulge in fruitless speculation?

Who knows when any one of Us will hear the siren call of the Unexpected?

zoo profiles

Zoos are useful for acquainting people with Rhinos. Our zoo presence serves a serious purpose in raising Awareness. Beyond question, We need human backing and attention where We actually live. Human activity requires human intervention.

Nobody asks to live at the Zoo. The zookeepers are usually good people, doing everything to keep Us safe and healthy. We are well fed. Ultimately every element of every day is determined by the Zoo management. Neither Rhino nor Keeper imagines the situation is Natural, however attractive it may be.

We do not abandon RhinoHeart, living at the Zoo. We are Rhinos. We live with the conditions We face, wherever We are. Still, We were designed by Nature to be in the Wild, and We miss it when We are elsewhere.

We don’t know what to do about the situation either. We would sigh, but sighing is Not Rhino (NR).

In the Beginning

When do any of Us start? For Rhinos, there is a moment when We become aware of what’s going on, there in our Mom’s body. This realization is pretty abstract. We are part of Mom, but also, We are each Rhinos-in-the-Making.

Rhino pregnancies go on for 15 or 16 months. The long and short of it is that when We come on out, We each have to be ready to Go.

Inside Mom We get not only a Rhino body, but We are schooled in Rhinotude, RhinoLore, R-Potential, R-Imagination, and R-Humor. Each of Us has a built-in R-Compass, plus an R-Connection to all Rhinodom, present and past. RhinoHeart. All of this while We are inside. We don’t know how it works or how long it takes, months or moments? No clocks in there. We only know that on The Big Day, We arrive equipped.

Some parts-in-waiting are installed deep inside, so We don’t realize it, because they are related to our bodies. Smelling means nothing inside, but once outside, things become clear as that System revs up.

This interior process is a Must, because when We get outside, there are a zillion other things to learn and absorb. Moms are spared the education within; it’s just part of the Natural System as designed. Her job starts when We arrive.

Plus We then have bodies to work with, which has a lot of attendant considerations. We need to get skipping right away, as you can imagine. Before skipping was invented, We lurched.

Surprise! w static 11-24

If there is one idea We dislike more than most others, it is the idea of creeping up and delighting yourself by taking Us unawares. Words fail Us in describing the Violence of our Natural Response. Our Every Nerve is instantly frazzled, and our Circuits detonate themselves. All our delicately modulated Inner Rhino goes into hyper-drive and We experience Hysterics. Please do not, at a later date, from a hospital bed, say nobody told you.

The Path to Individuality

When We reach adolescence, We leave Mom and head out on our own. Most of Us go alone, embarking on The Quest. Quests are lifelong, and each of Us has an individual route to experiencing and expressing her or his Inner Rhino. Quests are not rigid; sometimes the original idea adjusts to incorporate unforeseen contingencies.

Each of Us reponds to RhinoHeart, which no Rhino would think to question. Our Quest is not a Duty but an Exhilarating Adventure.

Though physically alone, We are companioned by Guides, a set of spiritual qualities and kinds of awareness. Though they have no bodies, We think of Guides as having specific characteristics. Guides support our Goals, our Vision, of what We can contribute to Rhinodom.

Here you see a picture of Patience, a Guide whose counsel is not universally heeded. No Guide coerces, but offers opportunities and encouragement. Then forgiveness and perspective when We botch things up.
