Timing!

There is no day like Today for having a Fine Time. Any Rhino could tell you that. It’s tricky to have a Fine Day Tomorrow, even if you plan it. And even excellent Yesterdays, though memorable, are admittedly over.

So We Rhinos concentrate our energies on embracing Today, since its the only day where We can crank up the Volume and wiggle.

Also, it’s the very best day for a Snack.

Ho Hum

Rhinos are  only slightly acquainted with Boredom. We are so intensely involved with our many Insights and Observations that We never lack Stimulation.

On occasion, for fun, We Rhinos might do our ‘Bored Routine’, but our imitations are seldom convincing.

It is not easy to suppress that alert R Twinkle in our eye.

Knock, Knock. Who’s there?

We Rhinos don’t have names as our Readers do. It is not a system which would work for Us, or give each of Us the distinguishing qualities We insist on.

Of course, We know one another by Scent, a series of sensations with so many varying levels that mere words could not pinpoint any one of them. Like a swirling ball of Impressions, Reference points, and Intimations. A Symphony played upon a harp, each glissando setting off its own meaningful ripples.

Rhinos are Natural Works of Art, each in a Gallery all our own.

The Power of Suggestion

The Can-Can (see Oct. 21, below) was hot stuff in its day, but in time gave way to the Hootchy-Kootchy, a dance based loosely on the Belly Dance of Egypt and Arabia. Unlike the athleticism of the Can-Can, the Hootchy-Kootchy emphasizes the Gyrations of the hips and spine in such a way as to Inspire the Viewer.

The Hoothchy-Kootchiste, usually a soloist, Undulates, Wriggles and Jiggles to Sinuous Music. Everyone has a Good Time. Interestingly, much modern/social dance reflects influences of the Hootchy-Kootchy, though it seldom gets the credit it deserves.

However for Rhinos, We achieve the same hypnotic Fascination via Scent. And a Very Dynamic Effect it renders on our behalf. No joke.

Peck’s Peak

Ms. Annie Smith Peck (b.1850) was a Mountaineer, Suffragette, Author and Lecturer. She was interested in Latin America, and its climbing opportunities, among which was Huascaran in Peru. She was the first woman to scale it in 1908. 20 years on, Peru renamed the mountain in her honor.

In 1911 she put a banner for women on top of Mt. Coropuna. She kept climbing things, primarily mountains, until she was 82. To the astonishment and dismay of the press, she wore pants when in the field.

Rhinos have never lingered in South America, just why We cannot say; just didn’t work out. But We can hail Ms. Peck’s vigor and sense of Adventure. With or without pants.

Bo Peeped

In 1903 Mr. Victor Herbert’s operetta, ‘Babes in Toyland’, opened in New York. It has had many successful versions over the years, both on stage and in film.

It combines elements of opera, melodrama, and pageantry for the entertainment of children. The enterprise was modeled on the previous year’s big hit, ‘The Wizard of Oz’.

Rhinos enjoy light theatricals, now and then. As in, occasionally.
