Today, the 15th, is the Ides of March. Things did not go well on this date for Julius Caesar, back in 44 BC.
A word to the wise is sufficient, they say. Rhinos say, Watch your back.
March 15, Maine was admitted officially to the Union in 1820. Most of the folks live near the coast. Per Square Mile, Maine has the lowest population density east of the Mississippi.
It is called The Pine Tree State, for obvious reasons. Plus it has more Lighthouses than any other state, and We can’t ever have too many of them! That is because the coast is mighty rugged, so boats need the help.
Maine is large and has mostly Wilderness, which in our Rhino opinion, makes it rich indeed.
Rhinos, like most Critters, like to think of ourselves as insightful and savvy. In the Wild, We are respected and do our best to take our place in the Natural Scenario in which We find ourselves.
Still, much of what goes on before our eyes seems Incomprehensible. We wonder and ponder and consider, but the pointlessness of so many global activities leaves Us flabbergasted.
Auguste Rodin may have got there first, but Rhinos suspect We know just what he was Thinking about.
This is National Oregon Day, which became a State in 1859. Look up its history; there’s a lot of it!
There are many Native American tribes in Oregon, which is geographically complex, having seashore and mountains and plains- you name it, they got it. So there’s a wide variety of locations for the folks of Oregon, plus the Wildlife. Lots of Wilderness, of which Oregonians can be proud.
Oregon is the Beaver State. Beavers are big rodents that eat trees, and Oregon is the State for that diet! Since there is apparently no Rhino State, We just horn in wherever possible and join the festivities.
Over the millenia, Rhinos have dealt with many weather conditions. Today We all live in warm or warmer climates. We get on about our business all right.
But Rhinos have lived in Cold Times as well. Today We are reminded of the Wind Chill Factor, which makes a cold situation even colder. The stiffer the wind, the colder the sensation for the Rhino… or anybody else.
Nature does not apparently feel pressured to please Everyone.
Rhino History is filled with accounts of Rhinos responding to Nature’s many merry pranks. In the Wild, which is where Rhinos have always lived, Nature is capricious, so our job is to pay close attention to Nature’s signals, then salute, and then get out of the way.
The main lesson We have had from an extensive past is to keep an eye on the Exit Plan.
Get your coat, and grab your hat…
On March 5, 1963, the patent was granted to Mr. Arthur “Spud” Melin for the Hula Hoop, a toy which he and his partner, Mr. Richard Knerr had ‘invented’ in 1958. It was derived from a piece of exercise equipment popular in Australia.
Rhinos do not own exercise equipment, but our enjoyment of Hula Hoops is not dimmed. We can appreciate them just the same.
What else is an imagination for?
Today We salute Ohio’s 1803 admission as one of the United States of America. We assume this recognition was an achievement of some sort for somebody.
What Rhinos are confused about is: what was Ohio before it got recognized? We don’t see how it changed based on an announcement.
However, We Rhinos don’t pretend to understand every little thing.
Today is International Polar Bear Day (see picture). Polar Bears are big critters, and live in the far North where it is cold.
They have a problem, which is not uncommon in Nature; their home turf is changing. Change is Natural. In this case, their land of snow and ice is melting away.
However, not all climate change is Natural. This is a good day for pondering that distinction.
