Knickerbocker Holiday

Mr. Washington Irving, b. April 3, 1783, was an influential writer in New York. He was interested in many things, not the least being the Dutch settling of the Hudson River Valley.

Two of his best known works are ‘Rip Van Winkle’ and ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’.

Rhinos like Mr. Irving’s stories, but We leave out the scary parts. There are quite enough of those in our daily lives, as it is.

Another Facet

Interpretive Dance is just what it sounds like; We do it, and somehow the movements translate a sense of one thing or another. The movements may be sweeping or subtle, they still express one attitude or another.

Rhinos have always been gifted as Dancers, and actually, almost all movement is open to interpretation.

If you want to see how varied it can be, watch a crowd at an athletic event; see how invested the individuals are, each dancing away, a testimony to their mental state. Nifty. Or watch a line of folks in the grocery store. Same thing, different Dance.

Squoze

Even for Us Rhinos, today can’t always be the very Most Delightful Day that Ever Was. It can seem unfair, but there it is.

But there is one sure-fire remedy, an option Rhinos call Concertina Power, which is the Uplift that music can offer the Dilapidated Spirit.

The actual instrument is not necessary, but the Will to get happy is. Humming can do the trick all by itself.

Worth Mentioning

Mr. Patrick Henry made his famous speech in 1775 in Virginia. A passionate call for Action from the assembly.

Rhinos are not clear about the meaning of this speech. Is the question, Liberty from something, or Liberty to do or be something else? As with many rallying cries, the precise meaning can be confusing when scrutinized.

Mr. Henry also said,”The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it’s an instrument for the people to restrain the government.” Sounds about right to Us.

YIR Apologies

Outstanding Intentions seem to have failed Us, which meant We did not Congratulate Nebraska on its Statehood, granted on March 1, 1867. We got distracted, but We do offer our regrets for the delay.

Nebraska is known as the Cornhusker State, but in 2018, Nebraskans chose a new slogan, “Honestly, it’s not for Everyone”. This demonstrates a dry sense of humor, which all Rhinos appreciate. Obviously, the folks who are there find it satisfactory, and what else is there to know?

No place on Earth is “for Everyone”, as any Rhino could tell you.

Plant-ation

We Rhinos have only a sketchy idea of how Nature has Rhino systems organized. So it is unsurprising that We find the operations of plants mysterious. We eat them, but We can’t comprehend their logic.

That is not to say that We don’t fully appreciate their magnificence and the gifts they grant to Us, big plants and small.

We are grateful to plants, and let there be No Mistake on that, please.

On its way…

We Rhinos are generally Optimistic, always knee-deep in Anticipation. Oh, We may try to look Worldly Wise and detached, but behind that facade lurks a sense that things are about to get Even Better.

And most of the time, that attitude seems to work out pretty well.

And when it doesn’t, at least We are upbeat up until the moment things go South.

The Jig is Up!

It’s a curse, but We Rhinos can get carried away with the spirit of the holiday… any holiday. We just jump on board, and then who can tell?

We admit, there have been past repercussions from this approach, but We can’t go hide under a rock, dreading the Worst.

‘Erin go bragh!’ That’s Today’s solution.
