What interests Us Rhinos is how little gets accomplished when We try to think.
Since this seems to be a general truth, We limit our expectations.
Keeps Us placid.
Rhinos are a unique species among the all the species on Earth. And among all the Rhinos on Earth, now or ever, each one of Us is unique too.
But what is holding our attention today is the fact that even I, an individual Rhino, won’t be the same Rhino tomorrow, or even in an hour. Then I will recall the Rhino who is me right now, and see that We are not precisely the same. We will have much in common, this Future Me and Me right now.
But We are all changing, mostly in ways We cannot comprehend. As is everything in the World around Us. Moment by moment. Pretty impressive, when We think about it.
Mr. Lewis Carroll published ‘Alice in Wonderland’ on November 26, 1865. The illustrations were done by Mr. John Tenniel, and mighty fine they are.
Rhinos have never been clear on how this young woman’s biography was captured with such brilliance, but We have always supposed Mr. Carroll did extensive interviews with this young person.
Today also happens to be National Cake Day. One thing Alice learned is that random eating can make you change size. Rhinos can attest that cake will certainly make you bigger if you let it.
When a Monstrous Serpent decides to ingest one of Us, We Rhinos do not cower. We would not give the Serpent the satisfaction.
No, We show them our stiff upper lip, and perhaps hum or whistle to display our indifference to their efforts.
Then the Serpent gets depressed and slithers away. It works every time. Ask anybody.
Today is Voltaire’s birthday, 1694. He was a caustic social critic, and particularly daring for his day in History. He was prolific in all sorts of forms, from books and plays to letters and pamphlets. He presented a range of ideas that We take for granted today.
It might be a good time to point out that historically, freedom of speech is a modern idea.
So We Rhinos wish Voltaire a Happy Birthday. It’s entirely possible that he is correcting matters wherever he is at present.
There are a surprising number of skills; some are grand, others modest. Rhinos lack the vast majority of them. That fact does not mean that We can’t appreciate demonstrations when available.
They make it look so simple. Often We cannot even imagine how the results are achieved.
Marvelous. We applaud. (That is one skill We understand.)
