the Calendar

Rhinos are fortunate in many respects, if not all. One interesting ability is that We cannot count above 3 with any sense of confidence. Seven, a Zillion, what’s the difference?

Consequently, the calendar is a bust for Us. We like marking up the calendar, but can never recall what is supposed to happen when We get ‘there’. If We haven’t already?

Thus, Rhino demeanor remains serene; it’s hard to be impatient when you have no idea when is when. Or when.

Dubious Pursuits

Because We live in the Wild, there is almost no point in housekeeping. Most of housekeepery depends on dust and grime, which Rhinos celebrate daily.

Dirt is what plants need to develop, and plants are what We need to survive. Our thought is: the more dirt, the merrier. Why would Rhinos try to suppress it? Also, it’s probably where it belongs already.

Dirt is our friend. Naturally.

In Private

Ms. Emily Dickinson was born in 1830, in Amherst, Massachusetts. She lived out her life there, writing over 2 thousand poems, only twenty of which were published during her lifetime. She was a recluse, by choice.

Rhinos like the ability to mind our own business, tend to our own thoughts, and express ourselves as We see fit. It is a luxury to accept our own best Guidance.

Happy Birthday, Ms. Dickinson. From Us to You.

Endurance

Ms. Willa Cather, author, was born today. She was an original voice in American literature, celebrating the strength of purpose of the settlers of the prairies.

These women and men she commemorated were  people providing for themselves and their families through honest effort. In difficult circumstances.

Ms. Cather wrote “My Antonia”, “Song of the Lark”, “Death Comes for the Archbishop”, and “O Pioneers!”, among others. She celebrated grit. The Rhino idea of a Big Virtue.

Uniquity

Rhinos are a unique species among the all the species on Earth. And among all the Rhinos on Earth, now or ever, each one of Us is unique too.

But what is holding our attention today is the fact that even I, an individual Rhino, won’t be the same Rhino tomorrow, or even in an hour. Then I will recall the Rhino who is me right now, and see that We are not precisely the same. We will have much in common, this Future Me and Me right now.

But We are all changing, mostly in ways We cannot comprehend. As is everything in the World around Us. Moment by moment. Pretty impressive, when We think about it.

Pursuing the WRabbit

Mr. Lewis Carroll published ‘Alice in Wonderland’ on November 26, 1865. The illustrations were done by Mr. John Tenniel, and mighty fine they are.

Rhinos have never been clear on how this young woman’s biography was captured with such brilliance, but We have always supposed Mr. Carroll did extensive interviews with this young person.

Today also happens to be National Cake Day. One thing Alice learned is that random eating can make you change size. Rhinos can attest that cake will certainly make you bigger if you let it.
