Kissing up

8-10 Pleasing

We can’t imagine why Rhinos would bother to try pleasing everybody. It’s a fruitless task, for sure. What pleases one critter agitates another critter. Where does all that second-guessing lead to? Right, nowhere much.

We are not recommending UNpleasantry. We are merely saying that other critters’ mindsets are theirs to improve. Not our business.

A reminder: We don’t have teeth like the ones in the picture. Just grinding teeth, African Rhinos, that is. But all those teeth make for a more passive-aggressive and unctuous smile.

Progress

Progress by moment

The way We Rhinos look at it, one thing comes after the last one. We were there, then We are here, and before you know it, We will be in another there.

Time and events are both confounded by this idea. Time is elastic, so the step in question may be a moment or a month or both. Events may seem unrelated at the moment, but no moment is independent of the events before it. All involve choices We make and have made, taking Us where We are headed.

Simplicity itself, right?

Between the lines

7-16 Zebra 629

Zebras are striped, as you know. We assume the stripes are like a barcode, by which Zebras themselves can sort out the herd (they travel in big bunches). Or it may be camouflage, though that is a less pleasing possibility.

These markings are festive, and a lot of other animals have similar-ish decor. Stripes, dots, blobs, whathaveyou.

Rhinos are ourselves mostly gray on gray. Our festivity is built-in. Rhinos are subtle and complex.

Flamboyance

8-1 Glamor 628

We Rhinos have an inherent Sense of Style; it is undeninable. If a Flourish is called for, We indulge in the extra tassel, of which there can never be too many.

(Please recall, since Rhinos do not actually own Anything, this exercise is entirely hypothetical. But it makes it easy to improve any costume decision at a moment’s notice. Celery Green works for some ensembles, Sauteed Pansy for others. Change the mind, change the frock. And, it always fits!)

Rhinos subscribe to the theory that Glamour and Modesty seldom share the same address. You might want to embroider that onto a pillow.
