Complacency

The Greater Rhino Family has a lot to feel good about. 50 million years of genealogy allows for a lot of both 1) Change, and 2) Relative Calm, in between times (usually thousands or millions of years.)

Rhinos are mostly ready for a challenge, but those who choose to ignore Nature’s shifts often end up extinct. When Change happens, it takes no prisoners. Whole branches of our family tree are defunct; fondly recalled, but nonetheless gone.

Here We see a Wooly Rhino enjoying an Ice Age, and why not? A lot of the challenge is solved by Rhino Mindset. Yup.

At the Gallop

The Pony Express did its thing, delivering mail from California to Missouri (and vice versa) from April, 1860 to October 1861, a total of 18 months. For its day, this was snappy service; mail made the trip in 10 days or under. Whooosh!

What short-circuited the whole business was the Transcontinental Telegraph, which worked even faster. Technology, technology.

Still, there is a great romance to Pony Express riders. Please recall: few Rhinos get mail of any kind whatever.

Knickerbocker Holiday

Mr. Washington Irving, b. April 3, 1783, was an influential writer in New York. He was interested in many things, not the least being the Dutch settling of the Hudson River Valley.

Two of his best known works are ‘Rip Van Winkle’ and ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’.

Rhinos like Mr. Irving’s stories, but We leave out the scary parts. There are quite enough of those in our daily lives, as it is.

Old Favorites

So today has been Mr. Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday, 1805. He was indeed a noble Dane, and was widely appreciated in Denmark, not to mention the world.

‘The Ugly Duckling’ tells of a mother duck’s disappointment in having a homely son. On the plus side, it turns out the Duckling is a misplaced Swan. Happy Ending.

Mr. Andersen was a fine fellow, but he was something of an ugly duckling himself (though it’s hard to tell with our Rhino model pretending to be Mr. A.)

looking into the seeds of time

It isn’t just Rhinos who want to know what’s happening, or about to happen. It’s tempting to investigate Developments, especially armed with Special Equipment.

Mr. Elijah J. Bond patented the Ouija Board in 1891, and sales were brisk. In theory, you push the pointer around, then discover stuff. All are whelmed by the revelations.

The Staff at ‘Your Inner Rhino’ find Ouija as good a tool as any for figuring out what on earth We are doing ourselves with the day’s posting. Talk about Unforeseen Revelations! Oh Boy.

Worth Mentioning

Mr. Patrick Henry made his famous speech in 1775 in Virginia. A passionate call for Action from the assembly.

Rhinos are not clear about the meaning of this speech. Is the question, Liberty from something, or Liberty to do or be something else? As with many rallying cries, the precise meaning can be confusing when scrutinized.

Mr. Henry also said,”The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it’s an instrument for the people to restrain the government.” Sounds about right to Us.

The Jig is Up!

It’s a curse, but We Rhinos can get carried away with the spirit of the holiday… any holiday. We just jump on board, and then who can tell?

We admit, there have been past repercussions from this approach, but We can’t go hide under a rock, dreading the Worst.

‘Erin go bragh!’ That’s Today’s solution.
