Rhinos used to travel more than We do today. Regular globe trotters. But few of Us today have ever been to Timbuktu.
Still, it is a Rhino Shangri-La, a storied location somewhere north of wherever, where a value is placed on diverse thinking and sensible discussion.
It is little wonder that We try to imagine its wavelength, to inhale its Mystique. Timbuktu. Gosh.
The Dodo was a large flightless relative of the pigeon, known only on Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. Exposure to European sailors did them in, and in thirty years, Dodos were all gone. They were not stupid, they were trusting and curious.
Nature is always shifting things around, and in the shuffle, many species disappear. It is a Natural process, We think. Then everything gets recalibrated.
The Rhino Day will doubtless come. Or perhaps it’s here. The possibility exists for every species.
North and South Dakota were admitted to the United States on November 2, 1889, in the same five minutes. The idea was that two states would have four senators, thus more influence nationally, though the population density was unimpressive.
The Dakotas were formerly part of the Dakota Territory, named for the Lakota Sioux Nation, which ranged far and wide on the plains. The western part of each state is a bit rumply, the eastern part is ideal for crops, having been flattened by glaciers.
There is plenty of room for Rhinos, but the weather is iffy: hot in the summer and bitter cold in the winter. Rhinos sometimes visit, but let it go at that.
Nevada joined the United States on October 31, 1864, following Mr. Henry Comstock’s discovery of silver in 1859. Since then, gold, and other valuable minerals have been found and mined in Nevada.
One feature of Nevada is its extraordinary dryness, having large areas of dessert. Parts of the state get 4 inches of water a year.
It has some big cities with exciting things to do, but much of the territory is barren. Mountains and flat valleys. A lot of each, popular with the native Wildlife.
On October 18, 1867, the United States purchased Alaska from Russia.
The concept of ‘owning’ great bunches of land defies RhinoLogic; We’ll just let it go at that.
But We can opine with vigor that the sale meant next to nothing to the inhabitants at the time.
Rhinos observe various Occupations with interest. Many of the goals of these professions are incomprehensible to Us.
Banking is such a profession. It is obviously seen as a Serious Pursuit, but it depends on counting, which We are the first to admit is not a RhinoSkill.
Also, since Rhinos in the Wild own nothing whatever, We have nothing to invest, except bemusement. And a distinct sense of style.
There are prime moments in any Rhino’s life, but mostly our time is spent neither Here nor There. On our way to Somewhere or Other.
Yup.
The Rhino Wayfarer appears to be going, or possibly arriving, or perhaps waiting.
Not only we observers, but the R. Wayfarer herself may not be entirely sure what’s going on.
Sort of Standard Operating Procedure, Rhino or not.
The fact that many of our Readers don’t seem to see Us in the casual course of their day, doesn’t mean that We Rhinos don’t keep tabs on you.
We do.
We Rhinos are a discreet group, not given to chatterbox-ing. We say what appears to need saying, and let it go at that.
We also keep our mouths shut (except to chew) when We have no special insights to offer.
Thus Rhinos appear exceptionally bright.
