Trailblazing

Sir Wm. S. Gilbert (b.1836), of Gilbert & Sullivan fame, wrote the books, dialogue, and lyrics for the pair’s many hugely successful operettas. Their talents complimented one another in every way. For most people, they exist primarily as a unit: Gilbert&Sullivan. Their influence on musical theatre has been profound.

Of course, Rhinos did not sing their songs to themselves before G&S wrote them; for that pleasure We had to wait. But We have made up for the delay with vigor. As clever as clever can be!

Happy Birthday, Mr. Gilbert. And thank you.

eat green

We are aware that Rhino tails are the envy of many critters, including those that don’t have them. We cannot account for this advantage, but We certainly can be grateful for it.

One secret of maintaining a tail is dietary. Greens is the Magic Elixir. Not only do We feel better, but We also appear to advantage.

Though We appreciate all out parts, it might be that tails are our favorites. But there are a lot to choose from.

Nuts

Rhinos are keen observers of Nature. We keep an eye out for possibilities; maybe some other critter does things We haven’t done, but might do, now that We consider a new option.

Squirrels are interesting, but they seem so nervous, almost frantic. These are not recommended paths for Rhinos. How could We maintain bulk if We were always scampering hither-thither? And all that chattering?

We do like the idea of living in trees though. Oh, and front teeth.

Calculations

For Rhinos, understanding the Past is like trying to understand the Present. It’s a no-win proposition. There are simply too many variables, most of which We have no way of comprehending.

The Past is interesting, We grant you. But We always come down to one version of what and why, versus another, if not a dozen variations.

The Past is great but relies on a lot of twists and turns. Gotta stay Flexible when dealing with the Past. Also, the Present.

An Ounce of Prevention

Ms. Annie Edson Taylor was the first person to go over Niagara Falls successfully in a barrel. She planned her stunt for her 63rd birthday. She made quite a splash, but never did an encore.

71 years earlier, in 1829, a Mr. Sam Patch jumped from the falls and survived, but no barrel was involved.

We Rhinos do not recommend this sort of endeavor. We recognize the Attractions of Lunacy, but We are mostly able to resist temptation. Mostly.

The All in All

For every critter, no matter the details of its potential, its Life is the crucial fact of its existence. It does not wish it was something else, like an ostrich or a flounder or a saxophonist. It accepts the range of possibilities of its own family, and rejoices in those.

No critter lives to please any other group of critters. It would be odd if they did.

And what critter is in a position to evaluate another critter? Hmm? Well, what sane critter?

The Big Bang Theory

A point of debate among Rhinos: how short is our fuse?

Every critter everywhere encounters Ignorance; it’s unavoidable. But deliberate self-serving Foolishness gets us riled, indeed it does, especially when critters are likely to get hurt. It just seems indecent and unnecessary to Us.

Then things happen in the Rhino System. We go Boom.

Betwixt

Here is our question: Are We Going somewhere, Or are We Leaving somewhere? Obviously, the two activities are linked, but in most cases, one motivation is primary. Each Rhino is the connection between the Point of Origin and the Destination, but each of Us decides why We’re going where.

Many of Us forget that the steps We take support our Decisions, however innocuous the steps seem. It’s a peculiar area of mental investigation, paying attention to these process actions, in their own right. It often seems as though these activities don’t exist or matter.

We don’t connect the dots; We are the connection between them.
