When the going gets tough…

Sunday, March 4th is National Poundcake Day, a day for Ingestion and Contemplation with Us Rhinos. We usually concentrate more on the former than the latter. For Good Reason.

We are Big Critters and must keep ourselves fueled up. For Us, Bulk is a necessity, a daily responsibility. We shoulder this care, and forge ahead, heads high, chewing.

Rhinos take things as they come. Darn tootin’.

Gussied Up

Given that Rhinos own nothing, plain or fancy, you may think We don’t give Style a second thought. You would be mistaken. We sometimes imagine ourselves in Exceptional Runway Situations.

Why not? We put in a lot of chewing time, and contemplating ourselves all fancy-pantsed is fun. It lightens our Philosophic Load, which is considerable.

The Real Error would be if We imagined making such an Impression meant anything worth knowing about.

Noticing the Negative

As We often say, Rhinos depend on Scent to keep Us current, which can be a L&D Matter. In the Wild.

What also should be noted is that the Air We breath has no Natural smell of its own. Whatever it’s made of, Air serves as a neutral vehicle for presenting Scent. It carries all sorts of information, long distance or short, and gives Us Rhinos a head start for our Computations and Responses.

Air. We can’t see it, smell it, or taste it, but We sure can’t function without it.

Combination Plays

Rolling our eyes is a Rhino method of dealing with Situations which defy comprehension. Alternatively, We use the Shrug. Both gestures have a range of expressive intensity.

We also use the two systems in tandem, including crescendos and rhythmic nuances, sometimes enhanced with oscillating snorts and pulsing huffs. Ancillary responses can also include tongue-clicking, toe-tapping and jaw-grinding.

When the Muttering begins, everybody heads for the hills.

A parsnip by any other name

At Your Inner Rhino We sometimes get a letter asking for fodder recommendations. Sadly, We Rhinos judge each plant on its dietary merits in the specific moment. What smells ideal today may be losing its gusto by morning.

Also, We don’t have names for plants as our Readers do. We know our endlessly varied local vegetation by scent, and are sensitive to nuance, nasally speaking.

Keep sniffing; it just takes practice.
