Ms. Johanna Spyri wrote “Heidi” in 1881, and it has been popular ever since. Heidi is a spirited little girl, who charms her gloomy grandfather, and Us in the bargain. Up there in the Alps. We like Heidi.

We Rhinos know very little about family dynamics, just because. We know our Moms and Moms know their Offspring, but otherwise, We just associate with the Rhinos in the vicinity. And let it go at that. Of course, We do have grandfathers, but it would never occur to Us to go “relate” to one. Actually, it’s the same for our Dads.

On this topic, We are wired differently.  Rhino.

by Margery Williams, 1922

‘The Velveteen Rabbit’ tells of a toy rabbit that achieves a Reality beyond his simple toy-ness. The affection of his child owner elevates him, and he is ultimately transformed into a real rabbit.

We all have childhood affections for things, but with time those affections can pale or disappear entirely. That shift is both Natural, and a little sad, the loved one put aside.

Yesterdays.

Considerating

Rhinos are generally Soloists. We are friendly with other Rhinos, but our social attachments are loose, to say the least.

Bees, on the other hand, are Sociable, capital S, Sociable. They call it Teamwork, and seem delighted with their approach.

Rhinos are a bit too willful and sporadic for that way of doing things. Or perhaps We are just too big.

Telling it like it is

There seems to be a  present fascination with the concept of Security. We hear of it and about it. Safe and sound at all hours of the day or night; we’ve got your back, Baby.

Rhinos, nor any other critter in the Wild, know nothing about Security. Nature does not offer it and We don’t expect it. It is a concept that seems unrelated to our circumstances.

Rhinos keep our own eyes peeled.

Contemplation

It’s hard to figure out how many leaves a tree might have, especially if you can’t count beyond three. The Rhino situation exactly. Our solution is to admit there are a Lot, and then press on.

Still, it is not easy to absorb the enormity of Nature’s Project, because there are many trees, not to mention grass and stuff.

Impressive, that Nature.

Rhino, here…

For each and every one of Us, there are two versions of Reality. Version One is Us: the ideas, impressions, affections and interests We hold dear, and the self We assume lives inside Us. Part Two is Everything Else on the Planet, real or imagined.

We can focus In or Out, whichever seems more desirable at any given time.

What is also phenomenal is to consider that everybody We encounter is dealing with the identical process.

On Cats

A Reader asks about the Rhino position on Cats. Short answer: We have no position on any other line of critters. Live & let live, etc. Hooray for each and every one of us.

It helps any discussion to recall that Rhinos live in the Wild. There, Cats are large and hungry, so We avoid Cats and hope for the best.

And We don’t have domestic Cats, because in the Wild, Rhinos have no domiciles. Nor any Tuna O’Nuggets.

Thus interactions are unlikely, rendering the question pretty much moot.
