Orientalismes

3-18 R-Korsakov
Sheherazade is by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and a haunting piece of music it is. All arabesques and seduction and mystery. Very Rhino.

The musical piece is based on “The Arabian Nights”, which is a great Rhino favorite. Ms. Scheherazade keeps herself busy telling stories. Rhinos love stories and story telling. We love stories today, and We loved them when We helped crank these out originally, say, a thousand years ago.

Yes, that’s right. Rhinos get around. And got around then too. Family tradition.

(Today is Rimsky-Korsakov’s birthday, but in 1844, We are told.)

Dawn, rosy-fingered…

3-16 Dawn

We Rhinos are great morning critters. Some may determine the day by a clock, but Rhinos just hold our breath for the sun to show up. A glimpse of sunlight, and We can get on with ourselves once again. Basking and chewing, idyllic.

Naturally, Dawn provides other signals and portents, like dew-readings, breezes, buggy hummings in the grass, and humidity. We try not to get impatient, but it’s a lot of excitement to withstand, right? And then, Voila! Ba-boom, Dawn! Entirely worth the anticipation, say We.

We try not to take Dawn for granted; Dawn is consistent in showing up, for which We are grateful. Nature does it again!

The taste and texture of dew is very informative, as you doubtless know. Rhinos have studied dew for ages, literally and happily. Yet another area of Expertise, for heaven’s sake!

None so deaf as…

3-15 Ides

… they who will not hear, is how that saying ends, in case you forgot.

When Julius Caesar died in 44 BC, he shouldn’t have been surprised. He had been handed his expiration date by a soothsayer.

The Seer was named Spurrina (says Suetonius, who ought to know) who had divined his forecast by perusing entrails, as any good haruspex would do. Seems a strange method, but We Rhinos have seen fancy thinking before, so maybe Spurrina was onto something. We have to admit, Spurrina got it right.

Spurrina should not be confused with Farina, which is a breakfast porridge. Your Inner Rhino likes to keep the record straight.

Effervescence in 3

3-14 JStrauss

Rhinos have always been fond of the Waltz. We don’t say We invented it, but then, We are discreet when it comes to saying anything.

The Waltz is tricky for Us, because Rhinos really function with four feet on the ground, making the counting intricate. Also, We do not do this dance, or any other, in couples. Not enough room for the gowns, however hypothetical they may be. We just sweep about, humming and having a Grand Time of it. We fizz, in 3.

Today is the birthday (1804) of Johann Strauss I. He made a lot of music, plus some children who also made a lot of music. He is the poster child for Vienna, accordingly. There everybody waltzes all the time, no matter what. That may account for their robust health.

Timely Warning

3-12 Fix-M-Up
Tonight is the night when something happens with clocks. We don’t tell time, We Rhinos, so it is a purely hypothetical speculation. For Us, it’s sun up, sun down, and stages in-between.

Still, our Readers like timing things, so We do too, in a Spirit of Camaraderie. Can’t get too much of that!

Secret Service

3-10 LipsSealed
Rhinos are good at keeping secrets, partly because everyone knows most things already anyway.

Also, Individual Details don’t intrigue Us; We don’t hold onto them.

What is interesting is what other critters think is important enough to keep secret.
