We Rhinos are pretty certain that within each of Us, there is access to a unique place We might refer to as ‘Never Never Before Land’. It’s an expression of the cumulative Adventure each of Us enjoys as a Rhino. It is the singular perfect setting for the perfect singular Us.
We find the idea comforting, not to mention invigorating.
Today is Michelangelo da Caravaggio’s birthday, b. 1571. He was a fine painter, specializing in the drama of his subjects, enhanced by strong directional lighting. Both Rembrandt and Rubens felt his influence in their paintings.
What We Rhinos can contribute to this topic is, it takes a lot of light to make a crisp shadow. You can’t have one without the other, as with so many things in life. Jot that profundity down, for future reference.
YIR strikes again.
Given the choice, Rhinos usually prefer the sunny side of the street.
Yet another example of how We are wired.
In the fine tradition of Iceburgs, Rhinos afloat only show a small percentage of their mass above the water line. The rest of the package is out of sight.
This phenomenon may apply to knowing a Rhino in almost all respects. We look at one another, and have to understand We can only comprehend each other to a Limited Degree. On dry land too.
It may also account for how little We know of ourselves.
“Nincompoop” came into usage about 1680, meaning one of defective reasoning. It may be related to the Latin phrase ‘non compos mentis’.
In common use among Rhinos, there is an added element to the meaning, namely, the Nincompoop has to be unaware of obvious limitations, indeed most often is complacent and sure of superiority.
It’s ironic really, but not particularly endearing.

Rhinos know quite a bit about Patience. We have learnt it during the last 50 million years and the myriad adventures experienced in that time.
Rhinos like variety in many forms, not least the way We view matters and vistas and other stuff.
The frustration is when We choose a way to view things, there are so many ways We have neglected.
And We know it, with a mild regret.
Like many older critters, Rhinos do get crumpled with time, sort of like a handsome book that got dropped in a puddle. The outside looks worn, but the pages retain their wisdom.
Like a Diary, our Inside stays forever young and vibrant. Rhinos are just like that Inside; there, Time works on a whole other set-up. Not that We understand the system, but We’d be nuts to deny its existence. Young, old, it’s all the same, Inside.
This idea keeps Us easygoing. On our good days.
Rhino Philosophers have always been struck by how insoluble many Questions seem to be. Thrash about as much as We like, We do not arrive at a useful or credible conclusion.
Consequently, Rhinos mostly approach Questions with the assumption that We will get nowhere.
Often We have been proved right, beyond Question.
There is, for Rhinos, no place like Home. Wherever We are, that’s Home. It is an advantage of not having houses, or particular locations to limit Us.
Many of Us have a range where We do whatever We need to. But sometimes things are not working out- We can’t find enough food, water, etc.- and then We have to move along to where things are more congenial. Naturally.
Home is an idea Rhinos carry in our hearts, not a place where We do the dusting.
