Serious Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzs

1-2-16 Slumbers

Tomorrow is your ‘Sleep Festival 2016’. YIR addresses the function today as We will be away tomorrow. Physically. Tiny vacation.

Rhinos can sleep anytime and virtually anywhere. We often challenge one another to do it, and We seldom fail to nap, at the very least. On the limb of a tree or on a Himalayan promontory, it makes no nevermind.

What makes it easy is that a doze does not impede our general regimen of activities, day or night. We just go along with ourselves, refocused on the Fragmentarily Perceptible. The inactivity can be very stimulating.

And relaxing. Even therapeutic.

Eating Out

1-1 DiningOut

In the Wild, Nature caters every meal. That may sound monotonous, but that is not the case.

Plant life is changing all the time, in cycles. Today Veggie A is healthy, two weeks from now is drooping, and in two months seems dead. The Moral: if you find it tasty, eat it now before it’s too late. (Eating now is always good policy.)

Happily, as Veggie A withers*, Veggie B is blooming, and merry mealtime alternatives present themselves. Thus Nature provides, not only for Us Rhinos, but for all critters out here doing our thing. Year round.

Talk about Seasons’ Greetings!

* (For those of you fretting about Veggie A, it will be back when the time is right. That’s how Nature handles these matters.)

Life Cycles

12-25 Cyclist

When a much-anticipated holiday like Christmas comes along, Rhinos sometimes imagine that a phase of Life is officially over. We can fall apart. Even though We know that isn’t the case, We secretly hold onto the concept, the Done Deal.

However, next day We get going to the next item on the agenda.

Hopefully with a high heart.

Beyond a doubt…

12-20 TroyHorse

Gift horses  have a checkered reputation for delivering unwelcome surprises. This phenomenon dovetails well with the natural Rhino inclination to ponder things that appear too good to be true. We have seldom regretted serious evaluation prior to involvement.

The loss of the opportunity is not the issue, so much as the repercussions of the move in haste.

If We be stodgy, so be it.

Toddling

12-16 TakeOff

RhinoTots do not toddle. When they are born, they are all ready to walk within a few hours. In the Wild, We cannot endure if We cannot get up and get out. That’s just the way it is. This fact accounts for the long pregnancy RhinoMoms experience; all that prep work takes place inside.

That is not to say that RhinoTots are particularly coordinated or graceful. Just so We’re clear on that. All those presentational skills are the result of time.

And Maternal Attention.

and Bushy Tailed!

12-15 Up&Away
Adolescence is a great time for the young, and an extraordinary time for their moms. Big Adventures with Vast Horizons! Going where no Rhino has gone before, or not recently at any rate.

The Good Thing is that most of Us, young and older, survive the excitement, as can be deduced from the fact that We are here to discuss the matter. Just part of the Merriment of being a Rhinoceros!

No joke, it’s a privilege.

Decisions, decisions

12-14 decisions

When We Rhinos are confronted with a Problem, We often feel pressed to Consider matters and arrive at some Definitive Conclusion. What makes these crises daunting is that often We don’t care about the Answer, muchless the Question. Nature dictates Policy, not We.

So We simply toss the whole business into a mental hopper, and pick an answer, almost at random. And nobody else seems much the wiser. Ask anybody. Assuming they were listening in the first place. Which seems unlikely.
