3-14 JStrauss

Rhinos have always been fond of the Waltz. We don’t say We invented it, but then, We are discreet when it comes to saying anything.

The Waltz is tricky for Us, because Rhinos really function with four feet on the ground, making the counting intricate. Also, We do not do this dance, or any other, in couples. Not enough room for the gowns, however hypothetical they may be. We just sweep about, humming and having a Grand Time of it. We fizz, in 3.

Today is the birthday (1804) of Johann Strauss I. He made a lot of music, plus some children who also made a lot of music. He is the poster child for Vienna, accordingly. There everybody waltzes all the time, no matter what. That may account for their robust health.

Michaelangelo’s birthday seems special. Like all great works of art, the Artist transforms awareness of the universality, magnificence and complexity of Creation with his talents. His accomplishment glows with Inner Rhinoness.

Of course, if a Rhino had been wielding the chisel, the results might have been different, but Michaelangelo got there first. He was 21 when he got started on The David.

Rhinos were otherwise occupied in the early 1500s. Otherwise, who knows what We’d all be gaping at in Florence?

3-2-16 Smetana

Bedrich Smetana wrote The Bartered Bride back in 1870 or so, and that did big things for Czech opera. We are glad he took the trouble.

The story of this opera is fuzzy to Rhinos, but the folk-fervor of the music is tremendous. Makes Us want to wiggle.

Wiggling is always good, and keeps Us fit for our daily assignments, whatever they turn out to be.

February 4 is Fernand Leger’s birthday, but a while ago. Still, We think highly of his painting style and rich output. Feels Rhinocerine to Us, and who would be better judges of that Essential than We are? He had what it takes to make Us tintinnabulate.

When We like ’em, We say so. Ask anybody.
