In an old house in Paris…

Mr. Ludwig Bemelmans’ heroine, Madeline, has numerous adventures. He wrote and illustrated them himself. Children’s classics ever since 1939.

Madeline is popular with young Rhinos because she is full of applesauce and ginger. Among young Rhinos, she has many fans.

We have changed a line from Mr. Bemelmans, which in our version now reads:  To the Rhino in the zoo, Madeline said, “How do you do?”. You see, being spunky does not preclude civility. Rhinos like respectful exchanges.

to the Power of 3

Rhinos cannot reliably count beyond 3. We have tried, and a special few have managed 4. However, when asked for a report on 4’s appeal, the gifted Rhinos report it means little more than 3, so why bother?

All Rhino mathematics come out with the same answer (3). Or “a lot”, that’s the other answer.

But making a mess with chalk is always a good time. At least that is the RhinoPosition on that topic.

Where are the snows of yesteryear?

Rhinos are endowed with lots and lots of Marbles. This is a good thing, because We lose our Marbles all the time. Luckily, We get lots of spares as replacement parts.

We do wonder where our lost Marbles get off to. There are so many of them, and so many Rhinos have lost them, there should be a Marble coating on the planet of considerable depth. Why aren’t We wading through them on a daily basis?

Maybe they evaporate?

Gustoed

A Perilous Situation characterizes any Rhino’s day, that being the Surprise Attack of a Gusto- an unpredictable energy surge. The Rhino is pressing forward with the day’s agenda, and all of a sudden, Wham! A Mighty Must snatches the Rhino’s wits and it’s off to the races.

Sometimes it turns out to be a lot of Fun.

(Nobody seems to know where these Gustos hide out when off duty. So don’t ask Us.)

Geo-Riddle

Turkey is a very busy country, dealing with scads of influences both historic and geographic. It has entertained Alexander the Great, the Persians, and was the center of the Ottoman Empire. It is surrounded by Greece, Bulgaria, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Iraq, and Syria. It also faces three big seas. All in all a lot to keep track of.

What We Rhinos are most unclear about is how Turkey can be in both Europe and Asia at the same time. Officially. A Great Mystery, if you ask Us.

It keeps Us up nights.

WhardWeGo?

We Rhinos are too large to use standard Camouflage. So We have perfected Alternative Means of Slithering Unbeknownst round and about, Incognito.

The surprise for Us is that these skills are almost never called for nowadays. It’s something of a Mystery. It may have some connection to our dwindling numbers.

In the face of Mystery, We remain calm or at the very least, calmish.

Tiger, Tiger, Burning bright…

Rhinos are entirely content in our Rhinotude, but from time to time, We like to think of what other critters must contemplate on a daily basis, how they expend their energies. It broadens our understanding.

The Tiger, for instance, does a lot of Lurking. Tigers hide and then jump out, taking advantage of their cunning ways. It is a system that serves their purposes.

Rhinos do not lurk, on principle. But then, our vegetation does not try to gallop away when it’s mealtime.
