Yesterday was Winsor McCay’s birthday, in 1869. A great illustrator with a sparkling gift for narrative- all in all, his work is a non-stop pleasure… at least, that’s the Rhino Viewpoint.
“Little Nemo in Slumberland” has his hero dashing about in a dream landscape. All of it is lovely and engaging and inspiring.
Like Nemo, Rhinos can make these mental jaunts without going to bed, but then, We don’t have beds.
Seriously, Bill. YIR widens my world. I’d never heard of McCAy. Wonderful tribute/homage.

I doubt there is an illustrator alive who does not owe this fellow, whether they know it or not. See his many images on Google Image search, if you get the chance. His work makes me shriek. Of course, I do a lot of that anyway.

Already did, Bill. First thing I do when you introduce me to someone new. He is quite amazing. Shriek to your heart’s content. You’ve earned it.
My comment was earnest. This is at least the third artist that this uneducated (but enthusiastic) viewer has met for the first time on the pages of YIR. So a heartfelt thanks, again.
p.s. Love the half-tone treatment!

Thank you. I was particularly tickled to find how to do that look, since McCay’s medium was the newspaper.
