Here & There

5-26 Here v there

Where We are is always ‘Here’, always sensational, RhinoCentric.

‘There’ is the everywhere else where We aren’t at the moment. Our relation to “There” is primarily theoretical. Or conjectural. It’s probably there all right, but our direct involvement is obviously limited.

Here is good. Yes, Here works.

Breaking the mold…

CookieCutter

There is an irony among all creatures: each has a label, like Rhinoceros or YIR Reader or Armadillo. While these definitions have importance, they do not nail down much of anything. A third party could probably distinguish a Rhino from a Butterfly, but there the discussion would stall.

Obviously, no two of Us are the same. We come in a startling range of styles, and always have. (See March 24) While Rhinos fit the mold, the recipe for each of Us varies. We share many qualities and sensibilities, but no one of Us is identical to another.

The same is true of gnats, in case they come up in conversation.

Family Album, No. 1

You call Us Teleoceras. We don’t call ourselves that, but what We do call ourselves would mean nothing whatever to you. Right? This isn’t Sniff-o-Vision.
12-3 teleocerasBack in the day, say 16 million years ago, We were one huge family, occupying the banks of various rivers and pools all over today’s North America. We lived in the water, like hippos, and also on the shore, grazing at leisure. There were no hippos in Nebraska (nor are there many today), and We occupied that bio-slot. Happily.

You may wonder about our skin as shown, but recall that We were a wildly successful group for 12 million years. During that time, Nature tried out a range of surface design solutions with Us. We were delighted to help with the project; wrinkly/smooth, hairy/bald, striped/spotted/two-toned, etc., etc. Change is fun, if unpredictable.

Given our Inner Rhino, We were fine and dandy and creative. We did do a lot to promote Belching as a digestive solution, a contribution to Critter Wellbeing which has sometimes been overlooked or misinterpreted. No room here for all our Accomplishments, obviously.

Then about 5 million years ago, We closed the show, making room for other family members. Nobody gets the stage forever.

One, Two, More, Much, Whenever, Then and like that…

We are not really into counting. We go for the Spirit of the Thing or Things. This disinterest on our part makes it hard to tell you how many years or pounds or families or distance, well, lots of things. The appeal of specifics escapes Us.

CountingHumans seem fascinated with particulars, and make many lists which you put in prominent places. Looking at a list often does not clarify anything for Us, but We cheerfully pass on the data to you; why not?- it’s your data. Many numbers: seventy, eleven. Enjoy.

The Rhino shelves of your home library should help here. You just look Us up when you want “facts”. That is how books work, We are told. Our system of records is based on scent, so books don’t figure much in the Big Scheme of Things. Sniffing Concepts is our approach to most everything.

You and We don’t have to share methods, just Good Will.
