I think there was a lot of debate about it, earlier in the century, so it was part of public dialog for sure. Still, I believe the date is correct, technically. Admission is a complex process; not only the US Congress, but the state itself must vote for inclusion, making a pinpoint date somewhat random.
I think my authoritative remarks could be summed up as “huh?”
