John Bauer was a Swedish artist and illustrator. Mr. Bauer’s work speaks to Rhinos everywhere, evoking a world We have never visited in fact, but know all about in our inner recesses.
That is no mean trick.
Today was his birthday, but in 1882. A good day for Us to pay our respects.

Thank you for introducing me to this marvelous illustrator! I am especially captivated by his renderings of Princess Cottonleaf and Leap the elk. As always, R lessons are lessons to love.

Such a rich talent, and, I think, little known in the USA. And what a sensual colorist! Still, many modern illustrators work is related to his… I guess all illustrators build on the work of their predecessors.

Yes! Some of the favorite books of my childhood were Journeys Through Bookland–my great-grandfather was a bookbinder in Chicago and gave a set that he personally bound to my mother when she was born–and Bauer’s work, which would have been done a little before the 1909 illustrations for Bookland, remind me so much of the drawings I pored over when I was seven.
