The Game is Afoot!

5-22 Fog

Hip hip hooray! It is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s birthday. In 1887 he gave the public The Study in Scarlet, the first Sherlock Holmes adventure. Holmes lived in London, which back then was a lot foggier than it is now, due to pollution controls in the early 1950s and 60s.

Not many Rhinos resided in London at the time. The air was not breathable (and We require a lot on a daily basis). It’s better now, but there are many fewer Rhinos, so We only visit every so often.

Pity.

  1. “The game’s afoot” is originally from Shakespeare’s play “Henry V”. But it was so good a quote that Arthur Conan Doyle wanted to recycle it; there’s still lots of juice in the phrase. Not a bad source to pirate it from, right?
