This year’s Big Sleep

Tonight is the Winter Solstice, which adds up to the least amount of Daylight of the year. Every other day will have more daylight after tonight. There is a scientific explanation, which you can explore somewhere else. We Rhinos just marvel at the fact, and let others fret about the details.

The Druids were an Ancient People who worshipped and honored Nature. Clearly they were onto something, but not all Good Ideas are perpetuated over time. In this case, it’s too bad for all of Us, meaning all of Us.

We at ‘Your Inner Rhino’ wish you sweet dreams; you get a moment or two more darkness to enjoy your slumbers tonight.

Wonders of the World

Of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the only one still standing is the Great Pyramid at Giza. And quite a pile of rocks it is! But, We are told that the list keeps adjusting itself, as one Wonder after another sinks into oblivion.

What really interests Us Rhinos is the Zillions of Wonders of the Natural World, among which We Rhinos are exemplars. So much richness and variety, all working together in a Natural Order We can only applaud if not completely grasp.

And you, dear Readers, are right up there as Natural Wonders too, each and every one.

The Real Deal

Mr. Paul Klee was born in Switzerland on this day in 1879. A remarkable artist, his work makes Us Rhinos consider the question: which came first, the theories for Expressionism, Cubism, Surrealism, or the works of a genius, whose originality demanded an explanation or terminology.

After all, a Painting is not a bunch of words. On the good days, it expresses something beyond the limits of words. What the artist is trying to express, only the artist knows. Explanations mostly fall flat, even if the artist is dishing them out. Red is nothing more nor less than Red.

Does anybody really Understand a piece of Art? We Rhinos have our doubts.

Knit One, Purl Two

December 18 is National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day. Sadly for Us Rhinos, We can only imagine donning such a garment, mostly because We can’t knit: no yarn, no needles, and no Know-How. And precious little taste.

But our Rhino mental closet is always available, stocked with any number of peculiar items, to which We Rhinos gravitate.

Oh Boy!

Oh, Wassily!

Mr. Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky was born today in 1866 in Moscow. He had a varied education, and at the age of 30, he began to paint. Today he is regarded as a pioneer of Abstract Art.

He tried various stylistic approaches, all of them vigorous. “Inner Rhino”, right? Right. It’s hard to disguise it.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Kandinsky.

On Safari

Today is National Cupcake Day, whichever nation that might be. A Cupcake is a Cupcake is a Cupcake.

Stalking Cupcakes is a tricky operation. We are never quite sure how to go about it, but We sometimes use Sprinkles as an inducement for Cupcakes to break cover. (They go crazy for Sprinkles.)

Then, with their permission, We gobble them up.

As a welldigger’s knee

Tonight the moon is on holiday, so it is very dark indeed. Even for Us Rhinos, who see pretty well in the dark.

But there is one activity that is best practiced on nights like these, namely listening to the stars.

It is a sort of music, but only to the seriously attentive. The Rhino’s cuppa tea.

Ah, Motherhood

As every RhinoTot learns early on, Mother Knows All. How she does it is a complete and utter Mystery. Maybe it’s part of the Motherhood Code, or a psychic skill she wakes up with one day.

However you slice it, Mothers can Tell when there have been Developments. Or perhaps Moms are just suspicious by Nature; it’s how they qualify to be Moms. One false move and Uh-Oh.

As the Tot, We know the jig is up when We hear that classic phrase, “What’s gotten into You?”

In Transit

Whatever shapes matters for Us Rhinos, We would be untruthful if We said it is all plain sailing. Half the time We feel Confused, and that’s the good half. The other option is feeling Very Confused.

So We proceed, absorbing experiences, following a path that We understand imperfectly at best.

And We try to stay cheery.

Was here, now Gone!!

Camouflage is the valuable art of Creative Invisability, a good thing in the Wild. Chameleons are good at it, and leopards are too. Rhinos are working on it, but there is a great deal of Us to disguise, and We often get little warning about upcoming Wildness.

But that is what Practice is all about.

Alternatively, We get low and stay still, and hope We are downwind of the Problem.
