Crowd Control

6-15 a la Escher

Inside each of Us there is a gang of miniature Selves, each with some mission, scooting around wherever needed. This gang is diverse: all different species, families, ages, genders, ideologies, what have you. A remarkably friendly collection of goals, aligning themselves as suits the case. Many points of view, but none exclusive of another.

Where this gang comes from must be genetic, but We can’t honestly say We know how they organize themselves, or when. We are just happy with the results of their efforts; they make Us kind, alert and grounded, which is good for our Self-Esteem.

  1. So. When I went back to school, I went to Harvard. My biology class was taught by this amazing guy who brought his dog to class and used teaching aids like a tangled bunch of spiral telephone cords to indicate what DNA really looks like. He told us that every cell in the human body also exists independently as a single-celled organism somewhere in the world. I was enthralled by this, and a hypothesis about the origin of consciousness based on mob psychology leapt into my mind–when cells work together, I posited, their sparks of consciousnesses combine and form a spirit much greater than the parts. After class I excitedly proposed my theory to the prof, who looked at me thoughtfully for a moment. Then: “Do a lot of drugs in the ’60s?” he asked. Apparently Rhino mind and mine are closely aligned. Yay us!

    • Yay for You indeed! Accept no alternative suggestions! At the very least, the professor might have rejoiced in your spirited involvement with his thesis; certainly he was in no position to know better about the idea’s merits. For all we know, he may have spent every day since pondering that query. May have been the best gift he ever got!
