Dear YIR, it seems likely that Mr. Franklin didn’t say it, as the first time the quote appeared was about 200 years after he had gone on to his Just Reward. However, it seems to have been promptly attributed to him, perhaps because it seems to have been prompted by a Franklinian outlook.
Well, I told y’all there was a muddle. And the article you cite says the same thing. What nobody seems to know is who *did* say it.
Consequently, I am not retracting anything much, ’cause it’s a swell quote and B. Franklin was a swell guy most of the time. At worst, this issue adds a little Mystique to his reputation, and that’s always good.
Still, We thank you for your research efforts. We tried and came up on the fence. Ah well.
